황덕휴의 아들이며 정구(鄭逑)의 문인. 1611년(광해

유생들과 함께 상소하여 정인홍(鄭仁弘)의 전횡을 논박했고,
1613년(광해
5) 폐모론이 일어나자
과거를 단념, 1618년(광해 10) 연산에 김장생(金長生)을 찾아가서 예학을
강의 받았다 1628년(인조 6) 동몽교관에 임명되었으나 취임하지 않았다.
1632년 최명길(崔鳴吉)의 추천으로 영릉참봉에 임명되었으나 역시 취임하지 않았다.
